Information on Employment/Job-Posting Scams Targeting University Students
The UL Careers Service has recently noticed a rise in employment/job-posting scams targeting students. These scams often involve posting fake job ads on university job boards, usually under the guise of a real company. If you apply for such a job, you might receive an email asking for personal or financial details or using tactics to put you at financial or legal risk. Scammers may also send unsolicited emails or social media messages inviting you to apply for a fake job.
Tips to Recognise and Avoid Job-Posting Scams
Research the Company: Search the name of the company (or the person listed in the job description) along with the words “scam” or “complaint” on Google. Check if there are any reports of previous scams.
Check Domain Consistency: Ensure the website and email domains in the job description match. For example, a job posting with a website address of but an email of joeblogs@domain.com could be a scam.
Look for Spelling Mistakes: Be wary of unusual spelling mistakes in the email address or job description. Poor communication skills can be a red flag.
Verify Contact Information: Look up the company and the contact listed in the job description using Google or LinkedIn. Ensure the official company details match the website address, email, and phone number.
Cross-Check Job Listings: Try to find the same job on the official company website or contact the company directly using the contact information on their official site.
Be Cautious with Fees: It is unusual for an employer to ask for a fee to apply for a job. Never send financial information during the job application process. Recruitment agencies typically charge fees to employers rather than job seekers.
Avoid Unsolicited Offers: Do not respond to unsolicited job offers, especially if you have had no prior contact with the employer or if the offer includes links requesting financial or personal information.
Seek Guidance: Contact the UL Careers team for concerns about suspicious job postings or emails.
Stay vigilant and protect yourself from potential scams! Feel free to reach out if you have any questions or need further assistance.
