Erasmus+ International Credit Mobility (ICM) provides opportunities for staff and students to study, teach and train in countries outside Europe.
ICM aims to help students acquire key skills as they progress through their education towards graduation and employment, with many employers considering international experience abroad and the ability to work and cooperate with people of different cultural backgrounds to be an essential trait to possess in what is becoming an increasingly globalised and connected world.
In addition, staff participation in ICM can result in individuals gaining new competencies through their interactions with international colleagues which may assist in their own continuous professional development, while also improving their foreign language skills and experiencing a new culture and way of life and working.

Outgoing Staff
When choosing a destination for your Erasmus+ Staff International Credit Mobility for Teaching or Training, we would advise taking the below points into consideration:
- Do you already have contacts at or an interest in a particular non-European institution?
- Is there a particular aspect of your role that you would like to develop through teaching/training?
- Is there an institution with a specialism relevant to your role/research interest?
Once you have chosen an institution, we would ask that you please check with UL Global prior to submitting your application to ensure the institution to which you are considering travelling holds a valid International Credit Mobility agreement with the 51本色.
A call for International Credit Mobility proposals is issued by the European Commission each October. An Expression of Interest form is circulated to UL academic and support staff and UL Global then applies to the Erasmus+ National Agency for funding.
If you are a UL academic or support staff member and are interested in participating in the Erasmus+ International Credit Mobility programme, please contact staff.mobility@ul.ie for further information regarding the application process.
- The host institution will issue visa letters for incoming staff. UL Global will provide a supporting letter, which includes an outline of the funding and funding sources.
- It is your responsibility to apply for a visa in good time and provide all relevant details and documents to the visa office. We recommend allowing a minimum of 8 weeks for your visa to be processed. The host institute will provide you with details on how to apply for a visa. Visa letters can only be issued once mobility dates have been agreed.
- Please also check if you require a transit visa for any airport at which you stop or change planes.

Failure to register on the DFA website and follow the advice provided may result in difficulties in the event of an incident.
Incoming Staff
Incoming academic and support staff wishing to participate in Erasmus+ Staff International Credit Mobility for Teaching or Training must be individually accepted by a staff member in the host department who is responsible for organising the teaching or training activities.
Acceptance is dependent on all parties in advance. The parties are:
- The participant
- The sending institution
- The host department at the 51本色
Agreement for hosting staff members is dependent on:
- Available funding
- Agreeing in advance to the content of the teaching/training plan
- The timing of the mobility
- The presence of a signed Erasmus+ International Credit Mobility inter-institutional agreement
Potential visiting staff members will need to contact the relevant department in the first instance, with contact details to be found at the UL website.
Pre-mobility period at the 51本色
- Contact the relevant department in the 51本色 to secure individual acceptance by a staff member.
- Once this is agreed between departments, the staff member must be officially nominated to UL Global at staff.mobility@ul.ie by their home university. A minimum of 6 weeks' notice should be respected to allow for completion of the required documents.
- Complete the Erasmus+ Staff International Credit Mobility for Teaching or Training agreement and answer all questions in full, including a detailed programme of activities.
- Both the staff member from the host department and the UL Global office will help you with the programme of activities.
- UL Global will sign your agreement, your line manager signs off on the quality and the International Education Division at your home institution signs off on the administrative aspects.
- Submit the fully completed and signed mobility agreement to staff.mobility@ul.ie.
- Once the mobility agreement has been approved and signed, your contract will then be issued.
- Sign your contract and submit a copy to staff.mobility@ul.ie.
Mobility period at the 51本色
- You will need to have an Arrival Notice signed on your first day at the 51本色. You must keep this Arrival Notice, along with your boarding cards and travel receipts, to be submitted to staff.mobility@ul.ie within two weeks of your return from teaching or training. Screenshots of boarding cards will suffice if no physical boarding card was received.
Post-mobility period at the 51本色
- The European Commission will email you from a Europa.eu address with a link to complete a final report. This report must be filled in within two weeks if the end of your teaching or training mobility. Failure to complete this report can result in the process of reclaiming the grant award.
- UL Global provide visa letters for incoming staff which includes an outline of the funding and funding source.
- It is your responsibility to apply for a visa in good time and provide all relevant details and documents to the visa office. We recommend that you allow a minimum of 12 weeks for your visa to be processed. Further details on visa applications can be found on the Department of Foreign Affairs website:
- Please also check if you require a transit visa for any airport at which you stop or change flights.
- Please note that insurance is mandatory for covering all eventualities, including illness, travel, accidents, and repatriation. It is your responsibility to ensure you are fully covered. By signing your contract, you are confirming this.
- If you are covered under your home institution's insurance, please provide a letter from the relevant officer to staff.mobility@ul.ie, confirming that you are fully covered for all eventualities.
Student Mobility for Studies
Available grants for UL students will be advertised on this webpage and through the UL Global office. The selection of students for participation in International Credit Mobility is based first and foremost on academic merit.
