The MRCPI Clinical Examination in General Medicine is designed to rigorously assess candidates’ clinical skills, knowledge, and professional approach, it is essential for those wishing to specialize in internal medicine in Ireland and internationally. The exam is divided into two main sections: Long Case and Short Cases.
Long Case: In this section, candidates are presented with a single complex patient case and are given 25 minutes to take a detailed history, perform a comprehensive examination, and formulate a management plan. The emphasis is on the candidate’s ability to diagnose accurately, create a logical differential diagnosis, and devise a thorough management strategy. Following this, candidates are interviewed by examiner who assess their understanding of the case and their approach to treatment and management.
Short Cases: This segment includes several shorter patient cases that examine the candidate's ability to quickly and effectively assess a range of common clinical conditions. Candidates are evaluated on their proficiency in clinical examination, diagnostic acumen, and ability to present their findings accurately. Common short cases often cover areas such as cardiovascular, respiratory, neurological, and abdominal systems, challenging candidates to showcase versatility in handling diverse medical issues.
