Brief Description

This programme will open for applications in September 2024. Funded places are offered on a first-come first-served basis, but these are limited and are strictly subject to Springboard+/HCI eligibility. Once the funded places have been filled, the course may remain open for those who wish to apply for a self-financed place.

The Professional Diploma in Health and Safety is a Level 9 minor award running over two semesters from January to December: spring semester (January to May) and autumn semester (September to December).

The programme is a fully online course utilising the increased functionality of education and collaboration tools brought about by the pandemic.  The lecturers are industry professionals sharing their expertise on day to day practices and future trends in the sector with participants.

Modules listed within the Programme Content with an (M) beside them are MicroCreds and can be taken independently.

The programme develops the skills in the graduate to create, maintain, and improve health and safety in the workplace by ensuring that safety policies, practices and legislation are followed in order to prevent accidents and health problems.

A strong focus of the programme is on the impact of personal behaviour in the assurance of a safe work environment.

This approach adds to the traditional approaches and seeks to co-create a safety culture in the organisation in which everyone feels empowered and responsible.

An application approach is taken to skills development for participants, which will involve:

  • Preparing health and safety policy
  • Carrying out risk assessments
  • Working with a range of people to provide a safe working environment
  • Keeping up to date with new legislation
  • Advising on specialist areas such as fire regulations
  • Keeping records of incidents and accidents
  • Developing materials and training employees

Semester 1

Behaviour Based Safety (M):

This module will provide an understanding of the principles and application of behaviour based safety in the context of more effectively managing workplace health and safety.

Health & Safety: Legislative Context (M):

This module will provide an understanding of the key legislative instruments of Irish occupational health and safety legislation that apply to a selection of the main industrial sectors operating in Ireland.

Semester 2

Accident Investigation (M): 

This module will review the Principles of accident investigation and the approaches taken to investigating them in the workplace.

H & S Management System Integration (M):

This module will provide an understanding of the principles of and approaches to integrating a health and safety management system into an organisation’s existing suite of management systems.

Springboard funded students can avail of the following optional modules

  • Learning How To Learn: Online Learning and remote working skills
  • Career Development: Job readiness and future employability training
  • Industry Learning Experience: Project application of course learning in a live setting.

(M) A MicroCred is a single module within a larger further award (eg. Certificate, Diploma, Masters). By taking a micro-credential you may be eligible to apply for a credit exemption should you progress to study for a further award.

Applicants are normally expected to hold an NFQ level 8 primary honours degree (minimum H2.2), or equivalent and have at least 3 years of relevant industrial experience. Applicants will be required to undertake a short process safety assignment to satisfy the course admission team that they have the motivation and ability to complete and benefit from this course.

Alternative Entry Route: Candidates who do not meet the minimum entry criteria can be evaluated under the UL RPL policy and may be interviewed to ascertain their suitability for the programme.
