This micro-credential represents a single module within a larger further award (eg. Certificate, Diploma, Masters). The purpose of this module is to provide the practitioner with the opportunity to develop knowledge and expertise nursing people with dementia. Particular attention is given to attending to the physical, psychosocial, emotional needs of the patient emphasising the need for effective communication and the use of specific interventions and approaches.
The importance of support for the person with dementia and family within a range of care settings is recognised and emphasised. The concept and importance of environment will be explored. Palliative care and end of life issues are also critically discussed.
Nonpharmacological interventions in dementia care. Post Diagnostic support including coordination of care, care pathways, outcome measures/evaluation. Therapeutic nursing interventions (implementing, monitoring, evaluating) regarding nutritional, falls risk, mobility, continence, medication and pain management. Care regarding memory loss, agitation, behaviours that challenge, depression, sleep disturbance, wandering, anxiety through effective communication and utilisation of psycho-social interventions and approaches (e.g. reality orientation, validation therapy, reminiscence therapy, pet therapy, etc). Lived experience of dementia, dementia care in the community, palliative and end of life care for people with dementia. Technology and resources.
Learning outcomes:
- Critically analyse relevant theories, innovations and best practice relating to dementia.
- On completion of the programme the student will be able to:
- Have a critical awareness of the physical needs of the patient with dementia.
- Demonstrate an appreciation of the management of behavioural and psychological aspects of care for persons with dementia.
- Recognise the importance of providing opportunities for meaningful life activities.
- Recognise the value of family and environment in the care of people with dementia.
- Demonstrate an appreciation of the importance of supporting individuals with dementia in end of life.
- A Registered Nurse or Registered Midwife on the current register of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland.
- Applicants whose first language is not English must provide evidence of either prior successful completion of a degree qualification taught through the medium of English or meet criteria identified in the English Language qualifications set by the 51±¾É«.
