The Computer Science and Information Systems (CSIS) Department will host the 23rd Annual Document Engineering Conference which takes place from the 22nd to the 25th of August.

Document Engineering takes a broad view of tasks associated with document handling and analysis. Some examples of Document Engineering tasks are digitising hand-written, historical records e.g. death records; optical character recognition systems (that inspired much of the explosion in AI's artificial neural nets); document discovery in the legal profession; markup languages for representing documents; collaborative authoring of documents and algorithmically improving the layout of newspaper articles.

Commenting on the event Paddy Healy, CSIS Dept. and organising co-Chair, said: "This event will consider research into documents in all their forms and representations.  Delegates will present, amongst many others, their findings on systems for improved knowledge extraction from paper documents to improved knowledge inference from electronic documents."

The conference features two keynote speakers, Gary Moloney, of OpenText, Galway, who will speak on "The evolution and growth of engineering documents for consumer engagement" and Joanne O'Doherty, of Kinetsu, Belfast, who will deliver her presentation on "Making a Difference through Data Visualisation."

Tuesday the 22nd of August, is Tutorial Day with tutorials entitled "Looking Beneath the Surface: The Science and Applications of Eye-Gaze Tracking for Assessing Visual Attention" and, of interest to all academic reviewers "Reviewer #2 must be stopped! Or, the art of providing good reviews."

From Wednesday to Friday 19 papers will be presented on topics as diverse as detecting malware in PDFs and technology-assisted legal discovery of spreadsheets.  A further 8 pieces of research will be displayed as posters on such topics as AI-supported CV matching to tracking the data privacy policies of websites.
