Experience a different culture and study environment and go abroad as part of your studies. We offer students the opportunity to spend a semester abroad in one of our 300+ partner universities around the world.

Study Abroad Placements are typically for one semester and are a fully recognised academic component of a UL degree. During the semester abroad, students remain full-time registered students of UL and do not pay tuition fees at the host University.

Study abroad placements can be carried out in the Americas, Asia or Oceania (through non-EU Exchange) or within Europe (through the ERASMUS+ programme).

Who can go?

  • Any student enrolled in a full-time course at UL, leading to a degree or postgraduate qualification
  • Typically students embark on a study abroad placement in their 2nd or 3rd year
  • Most humanities degrees include an integrates Erasmus academic placement
  • Seven UL programmes have a compulsory Erasmus semester

  • Students on the ERASMUS+ programme receive a mobility grant of between €230-280 per month depending on the cost of living in the host country, to assist with added costs such as travel expenses and higher general costs of living in the host country.
  • The Erasmus grant is not means-tested and should not affect any other local grant funding
  • Please note there is no specific grant available for non-EU exchange placements
