In March 2021, Professor Finbarr Murphy was appointed Executive Dean (Interim) of the Kemmy Business School at the 51±¾É«, Ireland.
Previous experience and education
Prof. Finbarr Murphy is Associate Professor in Quantitative Finance and Emerging Risk at the 51±¾É«. A computer engineering graduate, Finbarr worked for over 10 years in investment banking in London, Tokyo and Berlin before returning to academia and completing his PhD in 2010. His previous work experience includes several years with Merrill Lynch and UBS. A Fulbright Scholar and Erasmus Mundus Exchange Scholar, Finbarr has developed extensive important international research and industry links. His research interests include quantitative finance and more recently, emerging technological risk. He is co-founder of the Emerging Risk Group within the KBS and collectively, the team has successfully completed or is currently involved in several FP7, H2020 and SFI projects. These projects include dozens of EU partner organisations and the research impact has influenced EU Commission policy documents.
Research/Professional interests
Finbarr’s background is in Quantitative Finance and his areas of expertise extends from investment banking and derivative markets to empirical finance and machine learning in finance. In more recent years, Finbarr has focused on emerging economic risks from technological innovation as a research area. This juxtaposition between innovation and enterprise is an important cross-disciplinary focal point and exemplar of UL’s applied research focus. Finbarr’s funding successes include two FP7 and four H2020 projects in addition to two SFI Spokes as a LERO researcher. This success includes the first KBS PI of a MSCA-Individual Fellowship. His research funding is in excess of €2.8MM from projects worth a total of €45.8MM and several hundred EU partners. Finbarr was appointed to EU Commission expert group on Emerging Risk Liability and was subsequently invited to present to Committee on Legal Affairs (JURI).
