AHSS secured a Bronze  award in 2020. The Athena Swan Charter is a framework which is used across the globe to support and transform gender equality within higher education (HE) and research. Established in 2005 to encourage and recognise commitment to advancing the careers of women in science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine (STEMM) employment, the Charter is now being used across the globe to address gender equality more broadly, and not just barriers to progression that affect women.

The AHSS Athena SWAN Bronze award recognises that the faculty is working to promote gender equality and to address challenges particular to the faculty and discipline. The award commits the faculty to implementing a four-year action plan to address the challenges identified during the self-assessment process. The submission Self-Assessment Team (SAT), led by Dr Lydia Bracken, Assistant Dean for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in AHSS, included representatives from all departments and schools within the Faculty. The award is valid until 2024.
